| Tarangire Safari Lodge |
Luxury |
Tarangire Safari lodge is situated on a large ridge in the Tarangire Park. Carving out the landscape below the lodge is Tarangire River, a favourite watering place, which attracts impressive numbers and variety of game. It is a family owned and run, has absolutely no pretensions and has very friendly and efficient staff.
The lodge offers 35 en-suite tents and 5 bungalows. Both offer hot water, en-suite facilities and electricity, although the permanent accommodation is a lot more expensive than the tents. All accommodation overlooks the valley. In front of each tent is a small veranda where you can sit, relax, admire the view, and watch the wildlife. The large canvas doors unzip to reveal the bedroom, where you find two comfortable single beds and a writing table and chair. The honeymoon suite is situated near a secluded overlook of the river and is furnished with a large double bed made of old dhow wood. Three sides of the thick canvas walls can be rolled up to expose netted windows. The bathroom includes a solar-heated shower with ample hot water, flush toilet, and a dressing room with a wash basin, mirror, clothes rack and laundry basket. The bungalows are built from local stone in the circular style of Maasai huts. Their thick walls, large windows and thatched roof ensure that they remain cool even in the heat of the day. The rooms are tastefully furnished and spacious, light and airy. Electric lights and sockets are powered by our camp generator (220V).
At the heart of the lodge are the impressively high thatched roofs of the lounge and dining room. The open-sided design allows an uninterrupted view of the landscape and wildlife below, and captures the cooling breeze while you dine on our delicious home cooked safari cuisine. All meals are served under the vaulted ceiling of the open-aired dining room, providing great views of the landscape below. The cuisine is international, using fresh local ingredients and a hint of African spices. Our cozy lounge is furnished with couches made from the weathered wood of old Zanzibar dhows. The over-stuffed cushions make it the perfect place to curl up with a book, or swap safari tales. Tea and coffee is complimentary at all times, or try a local beer or a cocktail mixed at the well stocked bar.

| Nomad's Tarangire Safari Camp |
Intermediate |
Nomad's Tarangire Safari Camp is a small intimate camp tucked away at the southern end of Tarangire National Park. This is an area frequented by large herds of elephant, particularly in the nearby Silale Swamp and is equally accessible to the Tarangire River, life blood of the park throughout the long dry season.
Nomad have a number of small tented camps throughout northern Tanzania. They begun as the original camp that followed the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti. The emphasis in these camps is very much on the quality of the whole experience.
Nomad's Tarangire is a very small camp with only 8 tents, so this is somewhere to consider if you're serious about wanting to avoid the crowds. The unique design of these 'Bushman meets Bedouin' tents offers comfort, space, and light, and are designed to take full advantage of the passing breeze.
The mess and dining tent is welcoming and definitely somewhere to spend a relaxed afternoon, either inside in the library/lounge area, or in the shade of a tree lying in a hammock soaking up the Tarangire vibe. The inner bed tent area has large comfortable beds, optional roll down canvas sides and shade netting. The outer 'living' area is also netted with roll down sides, that can be put up or down as you prefer.
(The hotel runs its own community project. Bahati is a German & Tanzanian registered non-profit organization, helping women and their children released from prison shelter, food and medical care. They train women to make jewellery using beadwork and locally available items, thus ensuring self-funding of the project, although donations form an invaluable source.)

| Oliver's Camp |
Intermediate |
Oliver's Camp is one of Tanzania's best bush camps and with it's excellent in-house guides, offers the best quality game experience in Tarangire. The camp is located in the game rich wilderness area at the southern end of Tarangire National Park, to the east of Silale swamp and well beyond the reach of most tourists who visit the park.
The design of the camp very much reflects the desire not to leave any permanent mark on the area. Each year the camp closes at the beginning of the rainy season and a week or two later you'd be hard pushed to tell where it had been. Whilst Oliver's Camp is very comfortable and superbly run by the small dedicated crew, it's not the place to go if you are looking for serious luxury. This is one of Tanzania's best bush camps and a place designed to compliment the unspoilt wilderness of this area.
The camp features 8 beautifully furnished guest tents. Solid wooden furniture, beautiful cloth and gorgeous warm showers that can be taken under the Tarangire sky. Every evening, guests relax or read in the lounge and library tent, or drink sundowners at the fireplace, from which superb views of landscape and sunset can be enjoyed.
Game drives from Oliver's Camp are usually carried out in open vehicles, giving a feeling of absolute freedom. Off-road driving, allowed only in the remote areas of the park, gets you closer to nature and wildlife. Walking safaris are the speciality of the camp, and especially on walking safaris, the depth of knowledge and experience of the camp naturalist guides makes the experience one to never forget.
Walking safaris can take an hour or a whole morning or afternoon, but combined with fly camping.
Fly camping can take several days, letting you discover the most remote parts of Tarangire.
The light weight fly camp is an extension of the main Oliver's Camp. The fly camp is typically booked as part of a walking safari or simply as a completely private night away from the main camp. Tents are made of thick mosquito mesh, separating you from bugs, but allowing you to see skies filled with stars and passing animals at night. Fly camping is about adventure, not luxury: beds are comfortable and the crew cooks amazing meals in the middle of the wilderness, but tents are simple, with outside shower and bathroom facilities.
The stunning beauty and richness of Tarangire's nature and wildlife and the wide range of activities at Oliver's Camp are best enjoyed by staying at least 2 nights. However, most guests prefer to stay for 3 up to 5 nights, combining a stay in the base camp with exploratory walking adventures.

| Swala Luxury Tented Camp |
Intermediate |
Swala is a luxury camp in southern Tarangire where elephant, lion and leopard all regulars at the camp waterhole. Swala offers immaculate service and excellent food and the chances are you'll see as much from your tent as on your game drive.
If you are after some serious luxury in Tarangire this is definitely the place to go. It's a permanent tented camp that spares no expense for the sake of comfort. The camp itself also looks a bit bare when you first arrive, but this is probably partly because there's no shortage of game in the area in the dry season. Much of this game can be seen from your tent as there's an artificial water hole to which they pump water, just in front of the camp. Clearly this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the results are pretty spectacular.
One of the great advantages of this camp is that you are well away from the majority of people who visit the park. At certain times of the year game may not be as plentiful as on the Tarangire River, other than in the immediate vicinity of camp, but if you like the idea of a really well run camp, where you can relax in great comfort and be surrounded by wonderful bird life with a good chance of seeing elephant, lion and leopard from your tent, then a visit to Swala hits the spot.
Each of the 9 private, permanent tents features en-suite bathrooms with showers and terraces overlooking the bush and the Gurusi swamps.

| Kikoti Camp |
Intermediate |
Good quality tented lodge on the eastern edge of Tarangire. Easy access to Tarangire and well placed for walking safaris outside the main park.
Kikoti camp is one of a few camps set in the community conservation area just outside the boundary hill gate on the eastern side of Tarangire National Park. It's easily accessed from Arusha and is around 1 hour from the main gate of Tarangire National Park (which is the one you must access the park by).
The camp has 10 large en-suite tents set up high on platforms with good views over the local area. Each room has solar powered electricity converted to 240 Vac. The main mess and dining area is open sided with large shady thatched roves and the interior is decorated with carvings of all shapes and sizes on most available spaces.
Kikoti is well placed for the migration of plains game into Tarangire at the beginning of the dry season (July) and out again at the end (Nov). At these times there can be quite a bit to see in the local area. Being outside the National Park in a community conservation area there are a number for benefits such as walks lead by Maasai rangers and night drives. This is also a good place from which to visit the local communities with which the camp works.
