| Ruaha River Lodge |
Luxury |
Ruaha River Lodge is located around a series of rocky kopjes in a bend of the Great Ruaha River, blending seamlessly into its surroundings affording views up and down the river. Game is drawn to the river from the neighbouring hills and visitors can witness the great wildlife dramas unfold from the comfort and protection of their natural stone and thatch 'banda'. The Lodge is hosted by Peter and Sarah Fox who after a couple of decades living in Ruaha have an unparalleled knowledge of the park. There are 20 Bandas with either single or double beds, additional beds can be added. They all are en-suite with a shower, toilet and wash basin with solar-heated hot water. The rooms are protected with mosquito gauze on the windows. A generator provides electricity for lights and battery charging until 11pm each night. Hurricane lamps provided at dusk.
Drinking water is available and you can order tea or coffee anytime at no extra charge. The lodge also offers complimentary laundry service. Food is prepared from fresh produce from our Highland farm. A full English breakfast is complimented by freshly baked cinnamon bread, fresh fruit, tea and coffee. Lunch is a cold buffet with a selection of meats, pastries or pizzas and salads, followed by a dessert. Dinner is a three course meal with a vegetarian option. | Mwaqusi Safari Camp |
Intermediate |
Mwagusi Safari Camp was the first tented safari camp in Ruaha National Park. Mwagusi Tented Camp is a small exclusive tented camp overlooking a popular watering hole in the riverbed of the Mwagusi Sand River.
The camp is located in easy reach of the best game viewing areas of the park - the Mwagusi River, the Ruaha River and flood plains and the escarpment, above which miombo species such as sable are found.
The camp is designed along the lines of a traditional old-style African safari experience and the 14 tents are furnished with high density mattresses, dressing table, wardrobe, luggage racks and safari chairs - all built in traditional style, with lots of intriguing drift wood.
Solar powered lights as well as a number of traditional hurricane lamps provide lighting. Each tent is covered with a thatched banda, and at the front of each banda is a large covered veranda with a table and armchairs made from local materials. Each banda has an en-suite bathroom with flush loo and hot shower.
Fabulous game viewing can be experienced from the seclusion of your veranda; however, there will also be plenty of opportunity for game drives and walks throughout the area. The open-sided 4WD vehicles are equipped with high shade awnings to enable one to stand under cover whilst game viewing.
They also carry reference books and beanbags for photography, med kits and radios. Walking safaris, accompanied by an experienced guide, or viewing by vehicle without the disturbance of lots of other vehicles is one of the main attractions of Mwagusi's safari adventure.

| Mdonya Old River Camp |
Intermediate |
Located in the far north west of Ruaha National Park near the Mdonya Falls is this rustic tented camp (newests camp a Ruaha). Rather than aim at the luxurious market Mdonya appeals to those wanting a real bush experience. With animals strolling through the camp, simple tents and lounge, no electricity and meals like-mum-made rather than nouvelle cuisine, all add to the experience and makes you feel part of the environment rather than a visitor.
There are 11 safari tents all spaced along the banks of the Mdonya Sand River; ensuring privacy and great views. There are a mixture of twins and doubles all with private toilets and open-air showers. The tents are spread out over a large area with lots of shady trees to protect you from the hot African sun. There are comfortable sitting areas, with a small library and interesting wildlife artefacts.
The dining and lounge tents are located under shady Acacias and Sycamore Figs overlooking the dry riverbed.
The camp has cleverly constructed hides at both ends of the camp, where you can sit and watch the game pass by. Most of this area is a corridor route so animals pass through at all times of the day.
(The hotel runs its own community project. Bahati is a German & Tanzanian registered non-profit organization, helping women and their children released from prison shelter, food and medical care. They train women to make jewellery using beadwork and locally available items, thus ensuring self-funding of the project, although donations form an invaluable source.)

| Jonqomero Camp |
Intermediate |
Jongomero Camp is the furthest west of any of the camps in Ruaha National Park and one of the best safari camps in East Africa. It lies on the Jongomero Sand River a short distance away from the confluence with the Great Ruaha River and some 70 km from Msembe headquarters. The camp has it's own airstrip which is a short flight (15 minutes) further on from the main Ruaha strip, so although it's a significant distance from all other camps by road it's easily accessible by air from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
It's a small camp, with only 8 tents, and the design and build quality is second to none in Ruaha. Each tent, set under a shady thatched banda, is large and beautifully designed with more than enough room to swing even the largest of cats without coming close to touching the sides. The tents are of a superb quality with a continuous mosquito net window running all the way round and mosquito netting doors (as well as the normal canvas doors). The interiors have a subtle elegance and most importantly everything works and is as comfortable as it looks. The shower is spectacular and stands in a space about three metres by three metres, which makes it virtually impossible to splash water over the rest of the bathroom.
The sand river always has some water pools that attracts game all year around which you can watch from your veranda or any of the communal areas. These areas are protected in a grove of Acacia and Ebony trees, and comprises a bar, eating area and a natural rock swimming pool. The eating area is often left empty here as guests are often surprised with special meals including al fresco dinner sat on the sand river bed under the stars or classic safari picnics. The service and food at this lodge are exceptional.

| Tandala Tented Camp |
Intermediate |
Tandala is a pleasant, new camp about 12km from the Ruaha National Park boundary. You can enjoy the diversity of animals such as warthog, giraffe, greater kudu, dikdik, mongoose, bushbuck, reedbuck and baboon, and every now and again we are visited by African hunting dogs during the early mornings. The biggest attraction at Tandala is without a doubt the abundance of elephants who come and go regularly attracted by the water holes.
There are 10 spacious, elevated, luxury tents offering a variety of twin or double bed arrangements. Extra beds are available for children or to accommodate a third person. All lighting is provided by 24 hr solar and each tent stands at least 8m away from the next ensuring absolute seclusion and privacy. The en-suite bathroom at the back of each tent is enclosed in thatch and rockwork over viewing the bush. Hot showers are provided by gas or solar. At the front of each room is a sizable verandah with comfortable seating perfect for relaxing in private to watch out for game along the Mdweka sand river.
Askaris (guards) are present around the camp throughout the day and night and will escort you to and from your tent during the night and early mornings. Each morning is a breakfast feast. The two-course lunch can be served in the dining-room or out of a picnic lunch during a game drive. A three course candlelit dinner is usually served under the stars in the courtyard, by the campfire. The meals are carefully prepared by our French Chef Cordon Bleu and we are renowned for our delicious home style Mediterranean cuisine complemented by a selection of wines.
